Being rather short on space in my shop area, I have previously had to wait until warm weather to spray paint outside or resort to brush painting with a fan in the window to expel some of the fumes.

What I needed was a paint spray booth, but what I had was the aforementioned lack of space and a table saw which sat on a plywood box. The saw was only used on rare occasions and was taking up more space than it was worth. So the saw was sacrificed, relegated to the garage and it’s base became the base for an old furnace blower. On the open top of the box we added a furnace filter, a layer of charcoal and a double layer of cheesecloth to catch the initial blast of spray. Topping off the spray booth is a hinged MDF work surface, which is handy to have in this small space. The blower is powered by its original electric motor mounted at the back of the booth to keep it away from any fume concentration.

As it turns out the darn thing works quite well. All the fumes are not eliminated but a good 90% are and that’s enough to keep peace in the household. I have another furnace blower in the garage if anyone wants to give this idea a shot with your own improvements added.

Send me some pictures of your projects for future bulletins, I will be glad to let the members know what you are working on.

See you on the 13th. Ron E.
